Kalarpana



Kalarpana – Institute of Bharatanatyam


In 1994, Shobana founded a school for classical Bharatanatyam dance in ChennaiKalarpana. The aim of Kalarpana is to organize annual festivals throughout India. This includes performances of nationally and globally known artistes to help raise funds that will be ploughed back into training talented artistes who are financially insecure. Under its umbrella, Kalarpana extends its support to the handicapped and the environmental movement.

FOR OUTSTATION STUDENTS

Enrollment:

It will be mandatory to commence the lessons at Kalarpana from the very first lesson (beginner’s level). Each student will be considered as a fresher at Kalarpana irrespective of their age and previous training, as we need the student to learn our style. Promotion depends on how fast the individual progresses, i.e based on individual performance and does not depend on the performance of the batch.
Students selected to join Kalarpana must have to pay the One year fees on the date of joining along with the registraton fees.

c)      Colour photograph in dance costume, if available

Fee Structure:

a) Registration Fees: Rs.3000/- (Non-Refundable)
b) Fees:
i) 8 classes a month (2 classes per week)            Rs.500/- per month
ii) 16 classes a month  (4 classes per week)         Rs.1000/- per month
Plus additional 2 classes per week

Accomodation:

We have a quite lot, good hostels in the area surrounding the school in Alwarpet and Mylapore. These hostels costs a maximum of Rs.3500/- per person, includes accommodation and food.
NOTE: There are no short-term courses available e.g. 3 months, 6 months, 12 months.

Profile

Shobana, disciple of smt. Chitra Visweswaran, has performed with artists such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Vikku Vinayak Ram, Sonal Mansingh and Padma Subramanyam. Shobana branched out as an independent, performer and choreographer in her twenties.
Shobana the institutionalist-She set up Kalarpana Trust in 1994 to impart training in all aspects of dance. Today, Kalarpana benefits 92 students, mostly girls from the poorer classes and extend its support to the handicapped and the environmental movement.
The students of Kalarpana are scholarship holders of the
  1. Centre For Culture and Resources – Central Government the recipient of awards yuva kala bharati, Balasaraswati Award from the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha and the Laya kishoria Sundaram.
  2. Kalarpana has a branch in Muscat Oman which presently teaches 80 students as well as Kuwait.

Shobana the Choreographer: Shobana’s basic training in the mridangam for laya and tala; the flute has given her a rare insight into all dimensions of choreography and composing. She has recently been awarded the padmasri for her contribution to bharatantyam and cinema winning two national awards and three state and 4 Filmfare awards to mention a few.

Kalarpana known for its offbeat and world class presentations of unique events across the country brought to audiences in Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Cochin, Bangalore, Pune and Delhi, a sensational epic ballet – ‘Maya Ravan‘ conceived, interpreted and choreographed by Internationally acclaimed actress & danseuse Shobana.

Very few on this planet would have had the experience of seeing a few chapters of Ramayana metamorphosize into a character on their own ….be there to be a part of something beautiful and lose yourself for a couple of hours into the world of Maya Ravan…, because magic beckons!

Maya Ravan, a path breaking interpretation of the epic Ramayana, a one of its kind spectacle, hailed by full houses in more than 28 cities in the US and was presented in India in the year 2008.
Actress Shobana & the Students of Kalarpana presented “Maya Ravan” equivalent to a Broadway musical presentation, featuring the story of Ramayana in a dance & theatre format with dialogues in English. The voices were lent by celebrities like Naseerudhin shah, MOHAN LAL, JACKIE SHROFF, Suhasini Maniratnam, Revathy, Milind soman and other famous film personalities.
It is a two-hour show, with exquisite backdrop changes, stunning costumes & spectacular lighting.
